Oriental Sports Center
The Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, designed by Gerkan, Marg & Partners, was constructed from 2008 to 2010. It holds an 18,000-person gymnasium, and an indoor swimming pool and outdoor diving pool that seat 5,000 people each Host to the 14th World Aquatics Championship in 2011, the Center was designed to look like a wave crashing into the beach. (In this view, only the underside of the “wave” is visible.) The artificial lake was originally designed to connect to the Huangpu River, but stops short of Qiantan Blvd and the Youcheng Park riverfront greenway. It is a separate body of water from the pool, but was designed to thermally transfer heat to it. The buildings in the distance are in Xuhui, on the other (West) side of the Huangpu.
